Sandblasting Near Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch

If you've typed "sandblasting near me" into Google from Bournemouth, Poole or Christchurch, you've probably found a long list of companies and not much information. Some are national firms. Some are one-person workshops. It's hard to tell who does what.

I'm Airforce Holding, based at Eastern Business Park in Christchurch, Dorset. I've been blast cleaning for over 30 years, and I started restoring and preserving things back in the early 1970s. This guide explains what sandblasting is good for, what I take on and what to ask any company before you hand over your project.

What is sandblasting used for

Sandblasting, also called blast cleaning or shot blasting, uses air pressure and a fine material to strip a surface back. It removes rust, paint, grime and old coatings and leaves a clean, even finish.

Most of my customers come to me for one of these reasons:

  • Classic and vintage cars. Chassis, panels, wheels and engine parts stripped back ready for primer.
  • Gates and railings. Cast iron and steel ironwork cleaned and ready to be painted or coated.
  • Brick and stone. Old paint, soot and grime lifted from period properties without harming the surface.
  • Wood and beams. Years of paint and varnish removed with a gentle touch.
  • Paint damage and smoke marks. Stubborn marks cleaned away so the surface looks fresh again.

Why local matters

Blasting jobs are often bulky or heavy. A car shell, a pair of gates or a trailer chassis isn't something you want to post or send across the country.

Choosing a company near you means less hassle moving it, quicker turnaround and the chance to talk to the person doing the work. For customers around Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the rest of Dorset, that's a real saving in time and worry.

What to ask before you book

Not every sandblaster works the same way. These questions help you spot the ones who know what they're doing.

  1. What media will you use? The answer should depend on your surface. Glass beads and walnut shell are gentle. Heavier media is for thick steel.
  2. Will it warp or damage my item? Thin panels need low pressure and the right media. A good blaster will tell you how they'll protect them.
  3. Is your media COSHH approved? It should be. It matters for safety and for the quality of the finish.
  4. Can you prime or coat it afterwards? Bare metal can start to rust again quickly, so it helps to have a plan for what happens next.
  5. Can you show me past work? Photos of similar jobs tell you a lot.

The difference between sandblasting and blast cleaning

People use the two terms for the same job. Sandblasting is the old name. Modern blast cleaning is more controlled and uses a wider range of materials, so it's safer for delicate surfaces. I explain it in more detail in what's the difference between blast cleaning and sandblasting.
