How Much Does Sandblasting Cost in Dorset
"How much does sandblasting cost?" It's the first thing most people ask me. It's a fair question, but the honest answer is that it depends on the job. A garden gate and a full set of period railings are very different pieces of work.
I'd rather explain what sets the price than throw out a number that has nothing to do with your project. Once you know what matters, you can work out roughly where your job sits.
What sets the price of sandblasting
These are the things I look at when someone asks me for a quote.
- Size. A small bracket takes minutes. A car chassis, a long run of railings or a whole wall takes days.
- What it's made of. Steel, cast iron, alloy, brick and stone all need different handling.
- How bad the surface is. A light layer of paint is quick. Thick rust, old coatings and years of build-up take longer.
- The blasting media. Gentle media like glass beads or walnut shell suit delicate surfaces. Heavier media cut through thick rust faster. I use COSHH-approved media on every job.
- Access. Awkward shapes, tight corners and detailed ironwork take more care than a flat panel.
- What happens next. If you want a primer or protective coat applied straight after, that's part of the plan too.
Why a flat price per hour doesn't work
You'll see "sandblasting cost per square foot" figures online. They're a rough guide at best. Two jobs of the same size can take very different amounts of time, because the condition of the surface does most of the work.
A rusty classic car panel that needs a gentle touch is slower than a thick steel beam that can take a firmer blast. That's why I look at each job properly before I quote.
The cheapest option isn't always the cheapest
Blasting too hard, or with the wrong media, can warp thin panels or pit the metal. Then you're paying twice, once for the blasting and again for the repair.
Done properly, the job is cleaner, the paint or coating sticks better and it lasts longer. If you're planning to paint afterwards, read my guide on how to prepare metal or stone for painting to see why the cleaning stage makes such a difference.
How to get an accurate quote in Dorset
The quickest way is to tell me what you've got. Here's what helps:
- What the item is. A gate, a car body, a wall, a trailer.
- Roughly how big it is. Measurements are great, but a photo next to something familiar works too.
- Photos of the surface. Show me the worst bits.
- What you want at the end. Bare metal, ready to paint, or something else.
- Where you are. I'm based in Christchurch and work with customers across Dorset.

Frequently asked questions
Is sandblasting expensive?
It depends on the size and condition of what you're cleaning. For many jobs it costs far less than replacing the item, and it gives you a much better finish than sanding or chemical stripping.
Is it cheaper to strip paint myself?
Sometimes, for small jobs. For anything large, detailed or rusty, hand stripping takes a long time and rarely gets into every corner. Blasting is faster and more even.
Does the type of metal change the price?
It can. Thin car panels and delicate alloy need a gentler media and more patience than a solid steel frame. That extra care is what stops the metal warping, and it's why I match the media to every job. You can see the kinds of work I take on on my services page.
